Your high school counselor with have some scholarship applications. However, do not rely exclusively on this person. If you know what college you will be attending, check with their financial aid office for scholarship applications. Also, run a yahoo/google search for college scholarships. Apply for everything! (Don't fall for the pay sites. Legitimate scholarship agencies do not expect payment to apply.)

Grants and scholarships are essentially the same. The differences are legal for the organizations granting them. But from your perspective, there is no difference.

Good luck. There are millions of scholarship out there, but you must find them. Few of them will come looking for you.

You have selected an excellent time to start searching for scholarship money! A grant is typically given by the federal and state governments and does not have to be repaid. A scholarship is typically given by an individual, college, company, or organization, and you have to apply for it. Each one has certain criteria for receiving one.

The form for federal grants is the FAFSA form. It is a need based program. It takes into consideration your income and savngs along with your parents' income and savings. It also takes into consideration the number of people in your household. Depending on the EFC, it will qualify you for the Pell Grant, federal work study program, and student loans. It can bring in some cases some need based college scholarships from the college itself. You complete the form every January or early February for the upcoming fall semester or quarter until you graduate from college.

Second, current high school seniors can locate a list of local scholarships at their high school guidance office. Sometimes they will list some of the state grant programs.

Third, the local public library has a book listing scholarships with some of them not located on the web.

Fourth, the college's financial aid office and website sometimes lists scholarships that a student could apply for consideration. Also, some college majors list scholarships on their webiste.

Finally, join several free membership scholarship search websites. Most offer a detailed initial membership survey form. A good number are national scholarships though, but a few include local scholarships, too.

Good luck!
