I just started a new job and I am in an office with six other women who all love to talk! They seem to talk all day long and I haven't been able to find any similarities to join into the conversation. My supervisor seems to join in with them like she doesn't mind them not working, but I'm unsure of following the crowd because I am trying to make a good impression since this is a job that I am really excited about having. I am essentially a quiet person anyway, but I lighten up when I get comfortable with people. Im usually a pretty fun person to be around, but these women didn't go to college and I am a new grad. How do I connect with them without kissing up to them and my new boss?

Quietly learn to do your job well. Don't make waves because women are quite territorial and will think you are going to take a way their spot in glory. Be meek and quiet and play on their sympathy that you are the poor, lonely new girl, until you have been there for a while and they consider you a non-threat. Slowly then, show your real personality. Women in the work can be difficult for a newcomer; you already see that chatting and not working is acceptable where you are so to fit in certainly don't outshine any of your co-workers by actually putting in a good days work, or they will knife you in the back and make your life miserable. Good luck, learn and you can be like your co-workers soon enough, but for now shssssss, mums the word.

Make sure to do your job and stay on time to start off.

If there is a snack/coffee area in the office, bring in a dozen doughnuts on occasion just because (make sure there are no diabetics to be offended, if there are, make sure to get one or two that are sugar free or diabetic approved)

If there are "Older" women, you can break the ice by asking to see pics of the family. I'd say the kids just to be safe since you don't want to make them think you are calling them old by asking for info on the grandkids.

I've never met a woman of any age who could resist talking about their kids or grand kids.

If you don't click with them, just be polite, do your job, and don't cause waves. Be yourself and do NOT hide your light under a bushell but don't flaunt your work ethic either. Since you said you were a quiet person any way, I doubt that would be a problem.

Just go hey, hi, hello whenever you see them and when they leave go Bye, See you tomorrow or stuff like that. But keep doing your work because it's better for you to not get fired than to get fired.
