I need something of this nature for a science project. I was thinking of maybe heat releasing pellets. I need it to work safely on any type of material.

Are you familiar with composting ? manure , straw ,
and green when mixed in the correct proportions generates an incredible amount of heat , and will even smoke the 2nd or 3rd day . Can be done on a small scale for a project .

be more specific - how much heat and how long?

unless a compost pile is your solution, i suggest electricity to to the work.!!

you need some sort of incubator or controlled temperature chamber? then you can use a lightbulb - different lightbulbs produce different amount of heat. if you need just a little warm get the bulb that is in your firidge or any type of economy light source (halogen). make a false bottom and put a little table lamp with required bulb there because heat travels upwards
check temperature in your setting and change the type of bulb if necessary.

or if you have the money go in a pet shop and buy a heating cable that is used in terrariums - it is a loop with a plug, if you plug it in, it turns warm or hot - as simple as that. you can put this on the bottom of your setting or under false bottom. Or buy an aquarium heater if you want a warm bath. These can be switched on permanently, unlike those warming boots or cushions that elderly people use to prevent themselves from chill.

if you need just temporary heat source, use hot bath and just pour water in
