Depends on what time period your talking about. In 1997, he was too old and Camacho walloped him.In late 1982, he had a detached retina, and probably not in the sport mentally to continue.Ironically, when he retired at that time, Milton McCrory and Donald Curry were the top two contenders for the belt, so it would have been interesting.

Diminished skills..... At the end of his career, he fought 6 times in 10 yrs. He retired temporarily due to a detatched retina, but ultimately time and inactivity got him.

Nothing says it's time to hang them up like getting KO'd by Hector Camacho at 160 lbs!

In 82 he had a detached retna in his left eye, then he announced he didn't want to fight anymore, not cause of the surgery but because he just didn't want to box anymore. But he returned to the ring in 83, but in 84 he had surgery to his right eye. He returned to the ring and he retired about 4 or 5 times after that.

it's like the phrase 'the spirit is willing, but the body is not'.
He was even KO'd by Macho Camacho who is not a known big puncher during his last fight of his glorious career. He was 40 then, an old man when it comes to boxing.
