at what kind of background is needed?

it takes years to make it that high as an engineer. Although engineers are the one of the highest payed starting off (50-60k in that area) but yes after a few years you can achieve well above 100k. my uncle is well above it as a computer engineer.

I'm not going to discuss my current salary, but I'll say it took me 6-7 years after graduating w/ a BS in Chemical engineering to break through the $100K/yr income working in the semiconductor industry. That's excluding any stock grants or stock options.

My son-in-law is a computer software engineer with a BS in computer science and he makes $90K+. I have been an electrical engineer for 30 years (BS, MS, and PhD in Electrical Engineering). Many of my colleagues with similar experience and educational background are making $150K or so.
