I'm well-acquainted with the differences between psychology and psychiatry. Psychology isn't merely study; all branches of medicine have a department for research. People "practice" psychology, and psychologists "treat" patients. They work in the health field, not the field of social science.

Psychology is a general term meaning the study of how peoples minds work and how they think etc. Therefore, it is a social science.

Psychiatry is an approach to treating mental illness.

The difference you mention is more the difference between a Psychologist and a Psychiatrist, not Psychology and Psychiatry. Psychologists and Psychiatrists both practice Psychology in a sense.
