Take a trip to Brooklyn and go to Coney Island- It's a historic place, plus part of it is going to be torn down soon, for a more extravagant indoor/outdoor amusement park, so it'll be your last chance to see what will soon become "Old Coney."
go to the Top of the Rock- on 30 Rockefeller Plaza. Dine @ Smith & Wollensky or Peter Lugers Steakhouses. Walk around Central Park of course. Visit FAO Schwartz- the famous toy store which is by the Trump Tower- Those 5 places will give you endless stories for friends back home. dont 4get to take pics-pics-pics!!! Have fun!!!

Starting from Downtown NYC.
Staten Island ferry - Free Round Trip Ride, great photo opts of Lady Liberty and the Harbor.
Ground Zero - Right now there is construction going on but the hole in the ground just gives you an idea of how devastating the events of 9/11 were.
Greenwich Village East & West - Great unique shopping experiences. (Washington Square Park - alot of History in a small park)
Union Square is just above the Village at 14th Street - Chill there for a break from the AM shuffle. Next Stop --- 34th Street, Empire State Building, Macy's Herald Square, Madison Square Garden, Shopping Shopping Shopping.
I know these are over 5 things to see, but you must see 42nd Street Times Square at Night!!!
Stop at Strawberry Fields in central park; Check out the museum; go into harlem visit the Apollo.
The things to see and do are endless in NYC. I don't have a TOP 5 it would be hard to chose these are just some suggestions. Have Fun.

Your list is pretty good but there's a few things you could too: - Visit the Empire State Building, the views from here are absolutely awesome. You'll also be visiting during a less busy tourist time, so going here will be a lot easier. Go earlier in the morning, aroudn 10am, to avoid big queues! - If you have time to spare, go to the Woodbury Common Outlet mall. It's about an hour out of the city but you can get some great bargains if you want to do a bit of shopping. Prices are around 50-70% off when compared to shopping in the city. You can get travel informatino from their website or catch the bus from the Port Authority Terminal. - Catch a show on Broadway? Recommendation is of course, Phantom of the Opera. Don't prebook tickets though on the Internet as they're very pricey, in and around $200! There's a ticket booth thing in Times Square that you can 50% reduction on box office prices but you have to queue a long time to get these, kinda wastes 1/2 a day. I didn't do this, I just went to the box office myself and got great seats for $70. Definitely recommend it! - Aimlessly travel!!! Wandering around NYC is an awesome way to get to see things that tours and guides don't really show. You can find some charming restaurants or shops this way! - Natural History Museum. It'll take up the guts of your day but you definitely won't be disappointed! "Don't walk alone at night" is a generic comment. I was in NYC for a week and didn't feel uneasy or unsafe once during my stay. Just use common sense when travelling with valuables and don't walk around with a map out looking like a clueless tourist! Know in advance where you're going and how to get to it. New Yorkers are brilliant people for asking help and advice for! :) Have a good trip!
