My 98 GMC Z71 steering has a wierd feeling...it is supposed to have speed sensitive steering....sometimes as I am turning it has some resistance and then all of a sudden frees up and I almost oversteer the turn....I thought maybe a slipping belt but no....could the fluid need changing or could it be maybe the pump going bad???...It seems to do it more when the weather is hot than in the winter that is what makes me think it is possibly a fluid problem...Any thoughts??? Thanks in advance.

The best thing to do is get the on-board modules scanned as it sounds like your steering column sensor is acting up. I would also check the PS fluid as you never know. If there is a steering wheel sensor code stored in the PCM or the BCM you will most likely need to replace the sensor assembly at the base of the column in the interior of the truck. It isn't too bad to change, but I've done tons of these. I did have trouble the first time I did it. You don't have to take the column apart, just the lower part where it connects to the steering shaft. Good luck.

I agree with Jim P

the steering wheel position sensor needs replacement.
it's not a hard job, should take about 10 minutes.
like( Jim P) said very common problem with the old body style.
this sensor will not set a PCM/BCM code.
look no further than this sensor.
