The dog is so lucky to have found someone who wants it.
To answer your question - the dog can be trained. It takes alot of patience and rewarding to get the dog to do what is expected of him/her. As far as the dog getting used to her - I know they will eventually get used to each other ( the proper term is BONDING. The bond just takes time and lots and lots of patience. It just depends on the dog and the girlfriend.
The first thing that I would do with the dog is to take it to the vet - make sure that he/she has ALL OF HIS/HER SHOTS!!!!! Also let the vet do a general health check to make sure it is generally healthy!! Then take it to the groomer and get it washed, and groomed. After getting him/her groomed, make sure to introduce the brush and comb to him/her. Always praise him/her for allowing him/her to be combed and brushed. Verbally praise him/her too.
The name change will take a bit longer. I would stat calling the dog by the new name as soon as I got it home. Also talk to the dog like you are talking to a friend - interjecting the new name very frequently. Eventually, the dog will realize that that is it's new name and come when called. Make sure that you praise him/her when the dog comes to you.
Good luck!!!

It would be great if your brother's girlfriend could give this little dog a home. A groomer can take care of the coat, but the first time might be a bit costly. As far as changing the name, definitely not a bad idea.

At almost two, she will still be trainable. In fact most dogs can be trained just as easily at 8 years as 8 weeks. She was probably just mouthing out of happiness for the attention. My advice is if your bro's GF wants her, take the dog and go to a decent trainer, get it groomed. I bet it makes a great pet!

Of course you can train it look at the dogs that people get from the pound they are able to train it. Besides it sounds like it will be getting the love and spoiling it so needs and deserves.. BTW I got a dog that was 3 his name was Laddie the people that had him shouldn't have ever owned an animal it broke my heart when i seen how he was living I took him home ya know he ended up being one of the best dogs I have ever owned. so save that dog go get the poor thing asap. Oh and then pimp slap the lady that had him for being so mean and crule.

What a great story good luck with that little ball of love...

If the dog is friendly like you described then you shouldn't have any socialization problems. but she may be afraid of people picking her up or of other animals. the dog prob also isn't potty trained since she is just use to living outside all day and night. the dog should be trainable since many dogs are adopted from shelters at a couple years old and still get properly trained and socialized. i also suggest getting her taken to the vet as soon as you get her and getting her groomed. she may be infested i Fleas. teaching the dog her new name shouldn't be an issue since she probably never Learnt her name to begin with. i hope you are able to save this dog as soon as you can .

Definitely! An older dog isn't a training problem at ALL! We have a 4-year-old dog at my work (a career college with a vet tech program) who is incredibly smart and learned her new name. She may have behavioral issues, but she may also have some training. You never know.

No matter what others say, old dogs CAN and DO learn new tricks. They're past the mess of puppyhood and more calm, a lot of times. She may be afraid, but with lots of love and training, as well as great food and exercise, she'll be a wonderful dog.

Well dogs can be trained at any age. My dog was found as a stray and turned into a shelter and we took him in at the old age of 6. He now knows how to sit, stay, and come. Changing the name may be a little harder. If the dog was basically abandoned in the yard then she will probably need to be house broken and may have separation anxiety so beware.

2 years old is absolutely trainable! I just recently got a 4 year old dog that in just over 2 weeks has been housetrained and knows almost all of his obedience commands. They are very capable of learning and the nice thing is that they are over the puppy chewing phase.

yes, you can train a dog at any age. Just be aware there will most likely be behavioral issues so tell your brother to start researching dog training and get enrolled in a good obediance class.

Also, a groomer wouldn't be a bad idea for the dear. good luck!

Oh sure. The answer is YES to all of your questions! As long as the dog is friendly, dogs are never to old to learn

1st. the name can be changed it will take time though.
2nd.if she warmed up to u that fast she won't be scared. although the 1st night might. be hard.
3rd. she prob. has flees. so get her frontline that stuff works so well the flees were literally just dropping off of my cat. but give her a bath first.
4th. get her trimmed and that should take care of the messed up coat.
5th. training will be tuff but it is possible
