I can't help you with the schools - each city will have school districts that will have good and bad schools. I do know that in one of the satelite cities of Vancouver, the school district has a fine arts program for kids who are accepted. But I'm sure that Edmonton has the same.

But... when it comes right down to it -

pros of Vancouver: Mild climate. Beautiful area (mountains and ocean). Close to the Canada-US border. Multi-cultural society.
cons of Vancouver: Expensive!!! Rain. Expensive!!

pros of Edmonton: Not as big of a city, much cheaper than Vancouver. A real winter.
cons of Edmonton: COLD winters. Heating costs (because of the forementioned cold winters). Doesn't have the "big" scenery that Vancouver has (prairies)

Edmonton doesn't have a lot to offer. Vancouver would be much more interesting for both of you. The winters are better too.

That said, if you're very conservative, Vancouver may not suit you -- it's acceptable to smoke pot openly there and there is some urban decay. Edmonton would be a boring -- and extremely cold in the winter -- option, but may have less crime. It would also be far less expensive.

Honestly, try to visit both if you can. WestJet may fly between them for cheap. Vancouver is truly one of the top 10 cities in the world to live in ... it's almost like saying, should I live in San Francisco, or Boise, Idaho.

Edmonton's boom has housing prices skyrocketing; building can't keep up with demand. wages are also rising, but not keeping up with costs of living. also, a recent fire took out a huge development, revealing serious fleaws in the building code. Edmonton likes to think highly of itself as a city of culture and festivals, while others call it "Deadmonton;" the truth lies somewhere in between: it's a quiet large-ish city with some culture, but not the cosmopolitan, exciting place it likes to think it is. It is also in a fairly flat place, 3 hours from the mountains.

Vancouver has better weather, better scenery, more culture and more of what Edmonton thinks it has. It's cost of living may also be high (I'm not as familiar with its housing market/issues), but more worth the value, in my opinion (and with cheaper heating bills!).
