i'm having surgery done on my thumb soon to get a tumor removed from it. Its all the way down to the bone so the cut will be really deep. I'm getting stitches and im fine with that. The only problem is that i got an invitation to go to the lake with my friends a few days before the stitches get removed. When I go to this lake i ride jet skies and go water skiing, so if I go i know i'm getting tossed around alot. would it be safe for me to go? I don't want to take it easy when my friends are having a blast on the lake because its not really fair...I want to have a good time...not watch someone else or be stuck on land....what should i do?

I'm sorry but it's not safe to get that suture area wet with lake water. You are going to have to stay dry if you don't want to risk infection. Sometimes life isn't fair. This is one of those times. Sorry.

I would put neosporen on and wrap it in water proof bandage and go swimming. Now if you are in the tropics I would stay out of the water. It is too easy to get an infection in the tropics. Are the stitches likely to get pulled. That would be my main concern. After all the reason you have stitches is that the wound would split open if you didn't have them.

put a couple sterile bandages on top you your stitches and then wrap with some medical tape of some sorts, this will help keep the stitches in your thumb and the filthy lake water out of your thumb so it wont get infected

Put on a finger cot which you can buy at the drug store and then wrap the end closest to your hand with water proof bandage tape...or best yet is to drive the boat, if able..or just avoid going.

since it's only a few days before they're due to come out, i don't think the activity will bother them but, you can't let them get wet in that water. get some latex gloves. by them at walgreens or get them from your doc. make sure to tape around your wrist to keep everything dry. you should be good to go. have fun.

you need to ask your doctor my best guess would be that this would be dangerous since that water is nasty you could pop the stitches or get a bad infection ask your doctor at the time of surgery
