I'm very religious and me and my friend pledged to not have sex until marriage, but my friend is an atheist. I want to buy her a purity ring for her birthday but i wasn't sure if they were made mainly for christian people.

That kind of pledge is just smart and to be commended. Although a lot of people make the pledge for religious reasons, it isn't always because of that. I think buying he one would be a nice gesture and wouldn't offend her. Good for you in making this decision and even more so for being a good friend to someone who has different religious beliefs than yourself.

While I understand the thought behind "purity rings" and potentially they are a reasonable idea, I would be very worried if my either of my daughters wanted one.

But to answer your question, a ring is a ring and it only has the symbolism that you to attach to it. A ring doesn't make a marriage or an engagement, it is the commitment the couple makes that decides it. Give her the ring if you wish, but realize that is a symbol not a reality.

You have to be a Christian virgin to wear a purity ring. You have to wear it until you get married and when the first time you have sex you must take it off. It is a pure sign of virginity in a christian woman.

I'm pritty sure anyone can have a purity ring i'd think its just for the religious people. My understand of a purity ring is that it is a way to rimind you of the promise you have made to your self to wait till that special someone comes into your life who you are going to marry.

I do believe the "ring thing" movement is Christian in origin, but I don't see any reason at all why your friend can't wear one.
I am proud of both of you for your pledge, and for your friendship.

Well I think you can wear whatever you want. Wearing a "ring" won't make you christian, just like eating at mcdonald's won't make you a happy meal.
Wear the ring if you want. More power to you.
I feel like you gotta test drive your car before you buy it, but that's just me.

Don't put your purity into a ring. Pay more attention to keeping yourself pure. Don't get distracted by silly things.

Way to go girl! I am proud of you and your friend. :))

People can wear any kind of jewelry they want and have it symbolize anything they want it to. You might tell her you wanted to buy her one as a gift and see how she feels about wearing it. To her it would mean saving her love for marriage, not because God wants her to.

I don;t think you would have to, they're not called "Christian Only" Purity rings.

Just get her the ring and tell her of your support of her decision. That way you can demonstrate Christ like character and be an encouragement for a choice that honors God even if she doesn't see it that way.
