It depends how you say it, if you say it in vain then yes it has lost its meaning. But if you say as if to pray or somehow "call out" to god then i see nothing wrong with it.

I don't see that it is used stereotypically. It is merely an idiomatic expression of surprise or wonder.
You hear the same phrasing in Spanish all the time "Dios mio" (sorry about the lack of accents).

Yes.
I'm sure at one point you'd only hear 'oh my God' after witnessing a murder or something along the same shocking line.
Now you hear it every two seconds at the mall, over shirts on sale for fifteen percent off.

Sir,Mister,GOD,Doctor...these are all titles, not names. However, when we lose respect for titles one has lost respect for GOD's creation...thus reverence for GOD! As truth is part of GOD then any dilution of truth is disrespect for HIS Creation...e.g., justify a lie by twisting the truth in a criminal situation, the perpetrator is now the victim!

I think the expression is used gratuitously on low quality TV shows and movies just to push people's buttons. I find it a bit offensive even though I'm not particularly religious.

If you consider the commandment in its strictest sense, it is taking the name in vain. But it and your example have been watered down to the point you may as well be saying "Oh, my left shoe."

Yes I do. Even people who profess to not believe in God use it. God's name is holy and should be said with reverence.

I think the use of that term is vain use of the Lord"s name and it bothers me whenever I hear it. I have never used that expression myself.
