I am finishing my basement and need to add 5 cable jacks.....4 in series and one in another room....will this hurt my performance? Only one or two will be in use at one time. I just want options on arranging furniture....

If you need to add that many jacks, you may need a stronger signal coming to your house. This can be achieved by having the cable company run larger gauge cable to your home. (RG11 is larger than RG6)

How many do you have already? Do you have cable internet? Will it be on any of those new lines? Do you have digital cable boxes? Will any of those be on those new lines? There are many things to take into account.

Your best bet would be to run your cables from one 8 way splitter directly to each room. With a higher signal strength, the 8way wont drain too much signal.

If you are running high speed cable internet off of any of these new jacks, it will need to be a direct line to the box outside your house.

splitter costs in signal lost
2 way = 3db
3 way = 6db
4 way = 9db

amplifiers are tricky resulting in some channels overloading and cross channel interference on cable.

I tried an amplified splitter from RS with those results.
if u need the gain look into jerrold, winegard, etc amps.

for OTA it isn't too bad.

best advice - run all your cables to a central location - to keep cable length relatively equal. Connect as little splitting as possible to enable only the active outlets. U should be able to use a 4 way with little noticed loss of quality.

You may get the cable guy to give u more signal, but they usually want more $ for that.

The only thing with running multiple lines to a room is that you would most likely need a signal amplifier. You can get these at just about any place that sales electronic supplies. Radio Shack I know has them. However, you said that you will not be using more than one or two at a time so I don't think you will be having much trouble with them. If you do, you can get a small amplifier and it should work just fine.

Yes, I made the mistake of doing that and I lost signal strength and need to use a booster. Better to just have a long cable and connectors if you need it longer.
