The truth is this:
Joh 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Joh 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
And as for why God does these things:
Isa 55:8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.
Isa 55:9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
Understand God can do whatever he wants with us:
Isa 64:8 But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.
And as for me:
Psa 56:4 In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.
Peace be with you

Joseph obediently did as he was instructed in the dream.
He may have shared the information with others and maybe the biblical account just doesn't elaborate.
The Bible is a book that makes sense and must be analyzed maybe in a Bible study group.

It is a very exaggerated story about a real incident where Herod killed two of his sons. There is many things recorded about Herod but one thing that isn't recorded is the "death of the innocents" in the bible.
