Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim - In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

Hello. Yes, we do. Tithing is called "Zakah" in Arabic and it is one of the pillars of our faith. If someone refuses to pay the zakah out of rebelliousness he is considered to be outside the fold of Islam until he repents and pays the zakah. It is a way of purifying one's wealth and is a kind of wealth tax. It is separate from "sadaqah" which is a voluntary charity that Muslims give.

The basic rate of zakah is 2-1/2% but it varies for agricultural businesses. Charity can be given in whatever amount one wishes.

Fi Aman Allah,

I think so, even though I don't really know what tithe is, I read the other answers and I think I have a pretty good understanding of it. I am not a muslim by the way.

For the most part, no, which is why they ar in such a mess.

Are Muslims supposed to pay tithe?

Yes, if the meaning of tithe is loosly defined as charity and not a tenth as often understood by Christians.

2 1/4 percent of the wealth over and above your basic needs. In wartime, twenty percent.

This is what is required to clean or purify your wealth - an obligation. But charity can be given at any time.

Placing charity in a box once a day will protect you - twice a day your entire family. It can be as little as a grain of rice. Then it should be distributed to the poor.

Charity and healing have a profound relationship.

In Islam, charity takes many forms--not only money, but kindness to others, cleaning up the masjid, etc. Charity is expected.

Muslims are expected to pay zakat once a year, preferably during Ramadhan. Zakat is 2.5% of savings after your needs and your family's needs are met. So if you have $100 in savings, you pay $2.50. And the money goes to feed the poor, not even for upkeep of the masjid.

To the best of my knowledge every organized religion on this planet collects money from it's parishioners.
