I've heard a few say that its cos they need to get away from their sterile and picture perfect environments and experience 'reality' in India's dusty and frenzied towns...so does one then infer that you cant experience your spiritual nature in quieter and organised
surroundings??

Yes, many people do look to that region for greater spiritual understanding. As a matter of fact some of America's religious founders studied under middle eastern spiritualists before starting their churches. I think its because they have had so much more experience in meditating and searching for the truth without the material trappings of the west.

I would gues that it's because India is a country know for it's "many gods" and people who are seeking to find God on their own instead of taking the way that Jesus provided end up going to distant lands like India.

The Bible gives a partial description of such people in the following passage although it was not written with them specifically in mind.

2 Timothy 3:5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power.... 7 always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth.

I have never heard any of the people I know who went to India for spirituality say that. They went because India is the most spiritually focused and specialized country in the world. It has many swamis, yogis, sadhus, saints, etc, etc.

It's because they are riding the "PeaceTrain" into the New Age, across "The Bridge Over Troubled Waters" to be with "My Sweet Lord."

In other words they've been brainwashed.

Actually, most don't find their way to India in search for spirituality. Most in the US believe in Jesus and don't need to travel anywhere to be spiritual.
