After hurricane Katrina, being prepared for emergencies is an absolute must, in my opinion. It became obvious that our government and society broke down, and that we can't really depend on others coming to our rescue.
My family keeps a fully stocked pantry, and we would be able to support ourselves for at least 6 months. After a week or so we'd run out of fresh fruits and vegetables, but that's where canned and frozen come in.
We also keep a supply of toiletries, paper products, prescription medications, batteries, blankets, cash, etc. on hand for if we need them, and we periodically update everything to keep the foods and medications fresh.

With every day pass, our country is getting into more and more trouble. The inflation, unemployment and falling value of dollar are the main concern for our Government but authorities are just sleeping, they don’t want to face the fact. Media is also involve in it, they are force to stop showing the real economic situation to the people. I start getting more concern about my future as well as my family after watching the response of our Government for the people that affected by hurricane Katrina.
According to recent studies made by World Bank, the coming crisis will be far worse than initially predicted. So if you're already preparing for the crisis (or haven't started yet) make sure you watch this video at http://www.familysurvival.tv and discover the 4 BIG issues you'll have to deal with when the crisis hits, and how to solve them fast (before the disaster strikes your town!) without spending $1,000s on overrated items and useless survival books.

It is a wise practice encouraged by the prophets so that the people can be prepared for any temporal emergency. It doesn't take a natural disaster to place us in a situation of dire want. Any of us could be unemployed for a short or a long duration necessitating the use of our storage in order to get by. There could be any number of disruptions in the chain of supply causing a shortage in the stores and subsequent need to use our storage in order to get by until the supply chain is reestablished. A serious illness could disrupt our income and require us to use our storage. Here in California, we are likely to suffer from occasional floods, fires or a rare earthquake that would require the use of our storage.
Having a supply on hand is a very good idea and should be followed as much as space, money and laws will allow.
In the end, if we do our part, as much as is possible, then we can trust in God to help us through the rest of the rough times.

I think that having at least a 1-month food supply is extremely smart! As of right now, I only have two 72-hour kits, that I need to replace soon, and some extra boxes and cans of food. My husband and I also store water in 2-liter soda bottles that we re-use.
After living in CA, where earthquakes, fires, and floods are popular... (and being snowed-in in some places) my husband and I are always ready! Not only with food storage, but with the extras as well. Such as batteries, flashlights, charged cell phone, a few dollars in cash, money in savings, extra blankets and emergency kits both in our home and in our vehicle.
I think that sometimes people don't prepare, because they don't think anything will happen to them, or that if something does happen, they will have time to gather things.
As the scout motto says... "Be Prepared!"

I certainly don't want my government telling me I CAN'T stock food away. Though Germany may be concerned with space; just guessing.
As far as keeping food on hand, I try to keep 1-3 months supply of staples. I'm not fearing some catastrophe, I just think it's good common sense. It helps when you hear of someone who is in need and you can just step inside your pantry, and walk out with a bag full of goodies for them.

I want a well stocked pantry of staples at all times. I have a vegetable garden at most times and it makes me feel good to give produce to my neighbors. I do not like to grocery shop and buy in quantity so that I have no fear of running out if I miss a scheduled shopping trip. Over the years I have learned no to store a great deal of meat, as I forget what I have in the freezer and it gets freezer burn.
How does Germany enforce this? Surely they don't keep your receipts and compare them to the next shopping trip, or inspect your pantry............

We have enough food over here to feed the whole neighborhood in case of an emergency.
I think it is a right every American has...guess we will stay out of Germany!

I think it's a wise practice if it is done correctly. If you do it right and rotate your food, you'll be ok. But if you just buy anything you can and ignore expiration dates it won't do any good.

I think it is great...Gives you a peace of mind...you know that you will be able to feed your children if things get really messed up for a while, or unexpected expenses happen, they can be taken care of because you don't have to buy food if you don't have to. Like I said...great piece of mind.
