Both are possible. I've seen people faint (mainly because of syncopal attacks) at work, mostly when I used to work in emergency, though I've also witnessed a patient faint in neuro ICU. Most of the patients had their eyes closed as I watched them lose consciousness, but one man fainted with his eyes open -- very strange indeed!

You asked what was more "usual," and in my experience, eyes closed has been more common.

I'd consider it depending on the persons nerves. Mostly, eyeballs roll to the back while the nerves contract which forces the lids to move forward.
