...even though I don't like him that much or really want to hang out with him? The only reason I am thinking of going is because the lunch is at an Indian Buffet restaurant, which I absolutely love.

Bury The Hatchet and Go to the going away luncheon

If you can go to this luncheon only for the food, then go. I'll bet a lot of people go to going away lunches or dinners and are thinking-Thank goodness this person is leaving. You'll probably never see them again. Why not enjoy a lunch and enjoy the company of the other co-workers?

I would have thought that if you don't go, it will be the subject of gossip at your workplace. You should go because he is your co-worker and nobody is asking you to hang out with him. It is a simple going away luncheon. If the only thing persuading you to go is the fact that you like the venue, then you don't seem to be a very nice person

Is it paid for? If so, then hell yeah I would go. Hey, who ever said that there was "no free lunch", lol.

If it is not paid for, then no I would not. I would instead go when I wanted to go, at my convenience, not just to appease the little bastard that I really don't like anyway, or some other co-workers little ideal of what I should and shouldn't do. Screw them, they should mind their own business. If it wasn't mandated by your superiors, then you don't have to.

I'd go-- you'll look better to all your coworkers. It's just the right thing to do. And the food is good.

You don't have to go if you don't want to.

Its up to you. If you are friendly with other coworkers, go eat with them beside you.

Absolutely you must go.

That's all work is - spending time with people you can't stand.

The sooner you learn that, the happier you will be :)
