I have a six year old cat who was spayed three years ago. She still goes through heat cycles, but my vet has never seemed to overly concerned about it. Today, though, I have been finding spots of blood where she normally naps. Is this normal or should I take her in?

Take her to a different vet!

Cats in heat don't bleed. A vet can spay a cat in heat, and sometimes you almost have to, as they cycle in and out of heat unpredictably and it's darn near impossible to both schedule a time when they are not in heat *and* the vet has an open surgery slot. It's a bit more work for the vet to spay them in heat, as there is increased blood flow to the female organs, so it takes a bit more time and care to tie off the veins and arteries, but this is something any good vet should be doing anyway. The surgery takes a bit longer, so some vets do charge a bit more for spaying them then. It's perfectly safe though to get them spayed in heat. I'd make her appointment for as soon as you can get her in, then it's over and done with and she can recover before your trip.

It sounds like he botched the job and didn't get all the tissue out, causing heat cycles to continue. This isn't good for the cat (hormone up and downs) and he should be concerned.

The blood may be normal (I know dogs bleed during their heat cycle) and if it's only a drop I wouldn't panic. But call a different vet and ask what they'd recommend about this. She should not be doing cycles anymore. They may need to go in and remove the part that was left inside.

Well, blood= vet visit- and by the way go to a different vet.

Not all vets are GOOD you know. You have to have some idea of how to keep your cat healthy- and how to tell when something's wrong, like now.

If a vet says something you feel just isn't right, then go to another one.

This should be considered an emergency, as there are many things it could be and all problems are better treated if they're treated early.

For a cat who has been spayed, that is weird!! I would take your cat to a totally different vet for another examination. Did your vet spay her or did you get her from somebody who says that she has been spayed?

I'd have her checked by another vet to make sure that she was definitely spayed!! It could be that a tiny bit of ovary is still inside (the vet didn't get it all) and that is why she may have a bit of a "heat" situation (this is reported to happen sometimes).

We went through this with one of our cats several years back. The vet explained that if any tiny piece of ovarian tissue (even ligaments) is left behind, the hormones that cause "heat" cycles will still be produced, therefore creating a false "heat".
Don't worry, kitty can't get pregnant because they removed the parts that hold the eggs (the acutal ovaries) and the uterus.
Other than being bothersome, it is not a major health issue. If kitty goes outside, you may notice she has a few extra friends hanging around during her cycle. She'll go through the motions, but nothing will come of it.

It's worth mentioning to your vet during her regular vet visits, but unless she's exhibiting other unusual behavior (fever, lethargy, slow eating habit) I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I agree with eyez.
It sounds as if your cat has an ovarian remnant that is causing her to still experience a heat.
A surgical exploratory can be done to locate the remaining tissue.
Take her to the vet tomorrow to find out how this is affecting her health.

No its not normal as cats do not bleed in heat.. dogs do yes but not cats..
I think your vet may have done a lousy job and would definitely take her somewhere else..
She might have some infection too.. so have her checked out and make a list of questions you want to ask the vet before you take her in.. as she should not be having any signs of heat if she was properly done..

Cat's don;t bleed in heat so this is not at all normal. She needs to see a vet asap.

Good luck. Hoping it's nothing major.
