I was told in sunday school that the eye of a needle was a gate in Jursalem that was so narrow that the camel had to take all of his bags off and crawl through on his knees. Thus indicating that a rich man would have to get down on his knees and enter heaven and couldn't take anything with him. My question is, has anyone els ever heard this before? I've been Christian for years and this is news to me. I think I was at the Community Of Christ when I heard this. There are some articles online about it but so far no picture of the gate. http://www.biblicalhebrew.com/nt/camelneedle.htm

Those who believe that there was a "Needle Gate" in Jerusalem at the time of Christ have been lied to. This legend of a supposed narrow gate was invented during the Dark Ages, so as not to offend the wealthy benefactors who were contributing millions to building up the Vatican.

You can look to any reputable archaeological website that deals with the Holy Land, and you will find that this "Needle Gate" is a complete fabrication.

The meaning of the verse is simple. Those who trust in their wealth, rather than Christ, will be doomed.

Wow, I never heard that before. This definately sheds light (possibly) on a verse of the Quran.

7:40. To those who reject Our signs and treat them with arrogance, no opening will there be of the gates of heaven, nor will they enter the garden, until the camel can pass through the eye of the needle: Such is Our reward for those in sin.

Yes, I've hear that interpretation before and it makes for a good story but it is a doubtful interpretation.

Barnes Notes on the Bible

Mat_19:24
It is easier for a camel ... - This was a proverb in common use among the Jews, and is still common among the Arabians.

To denote that a thing was impossible or exceedingly difficult, they said that a camel or an elephant might as soon walk through a needle’s eye. In the use of such proverbs it is not necessary to understand them literally. They merely denote the extreme difficulty of the case.

Why would they create "a gate in Jerusalem that was so narrow that the camel had to take all of his bags off and crawl through on his knees" in the first place?

I heard this too, but I think the gate part is a myth

I've heard that taught so many places, but there's a main point to focus on. The point of Jesus' words was that the rich have a hard time trusting Jesus, so the riches could be a hinderance to coming to faith in Jesus.

In Timothy it says that some Christians are rich, but they should trust in the Lord, not riches. It says NOTHING about "couldn't take anything with him through a passage", meaning that you don't have to give away everything you own to be a Christian. That would be a false gospel.

That is correct.

The Bible is more understood when you study the cultures, terminology, and traditions of biblical time. There are so many illustrations painted in the Word. That's why we have to study....study...study! God wants us to "dig into" His Word. That's how a good pastor can preach a sermon on just a portion of a verse.

Yes, the bible actually refers to that gate. The eye of a needle is commonly mistaken with the part of the tool with the same name.

I think Jesus said to one man forsake all that u have and follow me. The man couldnt do it. So to me a man that is not rich spiritually toward God and he cares more about his money. than yes it would easier for camel to go through the eye of a needle than a man to go to heaven. Jesus meant it literally.
