Actually, you have to take into account that the best answer for you might not be the best answer for the person asking the question. the people giving the answers all have a right to their individual criteria as well. I agree that the more credibility this site has, the more it can be relied on and trusted, but part of the fact that this site is open and free, is that everyone gets to play. There are even individuals who take some perverse joy in the idea that they can misdirect others and "goof!" there are others who misuse the format to drag out a soapbox and preach to whatever audience they think they can muster. I'm not saying that this is the case here, but the only way to really affect this site is by giving the best answers you can give yourself, and reporting the individuals that egregiously cross the line.
When you ask a question, you take what's offered, report the offenders, and always remember that the answers are worth every cent they cost you (fortunately, often quite a bit more) When you give an answer, give the best answer that you can give, give documentation when you can, and hope that the quality eventually starts to shine through. Eventually, others will follow your example, if for no other reason than out of competition! If you want to raise the bar, raise it! I applaud your efforts and will also try to do the best I can, but until they make you a moderator, just set the example.

This site is full of crap. It doesn't mean you can't find GOOD answers. But many people take this just as a way to kill time and other take it to bother some other participants.
I've seen people selects very bad answers as "the best" one. and if you, as the asker, really didn't know the answer or even have no idea about the topic, what criteria should you follow to select it? And if it is an important thing? this section is pretty safe. Maybe someone wants a tatoo and the answer says "kick me" in Chinese. But that's not really serious. There are other sections with more serious things.
We need, as you say, answer when we have something to add. Not when we just want to guess or, as many, just give the link to a damn online translator (totally useless answer).
Y!A has great things, but also a lot of junk.

I totally agree with you as far as languages is concerned. Other subjects are not so easy to rate.
But I find that many people give thumbs down not even based on spelling or grammatical errors. They just seem to enjoy doing it just because, and it's annoying, especially when you know the answer is correct.
Those are immature, stupid and ignorant people that for some reason think they're funny. I wonder how they learned to use a computer. Go figure.
For that reason, when I answer a question I couldn't care less what they give me. I don't look at my answer again. If I'm chosen as the 'best answer', I like it. If I'm not, I don't even know, I forget what questions I replied to.
That makes life much more pleasant.

You've posted this comment/question in the language category. When I give a "thumbs-down" to a language answer, it's often because it is a poor translation in grammar, spelling, or both. As an asker, I expect that the answers to a translation question will be correct in grammar, spelling and usage. In other categories, it may not matter so much, but "presentation" still counts for alot. Just like I wouldn't expect to be offered a job as an expert in my field if I showed up wearing a t-shirt and jeans, people judge the quality of answers by how they are presented, fair or not.

That's all very well as long as you're talking about cars or your stereo, but when they ask about God or religion how can you avoid subjective observations? Maybe I'm not understanding you.
Oh, I see. Yes, I agree, but as boys will be boys, people will be people, they don't always weigh the facts; they just don't like the answer so, boom! you outta there!

Would you please give examples of ratings that were made based on subjective observations?
