I have taken anti-depressants for ten years or longer. They work but the chief relief has been psychotherapy. I looked up TMS on Yahoo! web search (the Mayo clinic and wikipedia summaries) and was not impressed.

TMS is not like elecroconvulsive therapy since it does not elicit seizures. It is not known why it or how it may work. It works, if it works, like ECT, for only a few weeks of relief.
There is no known danger or side effects but it has not been FDA approved. Like ECT it is an unknown used where the cause of depression is not really known like hitting an ill person with a club in hopes it might improve him.

I know depression is a natural emotion; you are born with it. As a biochemist I also know they know very little of how the brain functions. I seriously doubt clinical depression is due to a chemical imbalance. I seriously doubt the feeling of depression is due to chemicals. The feeling (down feeling through sadness through deep depression) or qualia is a natural signal to change behavior and/or thinking habits because they are wrong for you. I think any effect of an antidepressant is primarily due to the uplift just having something positive that is being done for one gives you. The main way to rid one of depression is to stop negative thinking habits.

I would not seek TMS as a cure for depression. I would go for psychotherapy.

Good positive thoughts, good health, peace and love!

It's a newer incarnation of Electro Shock Therapy which can be helpful in treatment resistant depression.
