I am only a college student living on my own i can not afford to take him to a vet. He is liter trained and i dont want it to get infected. he was pulling at his claws the past 2 nights and i found blood this morning, when i looked i saw he had puled the nail all the way off. i see a little tip in there still but it smells very bad so i used peroxide to clean it and put neosporin and wrapped it all up like a cast, but it still smells. how can i treat him?

I know you cannot afford a vet visit, but if you have to borrow the money, you really need to take him. It sounds like it is infected and needs antibiotics. The infection could travel up the extremity just like it could in humans. Besides, he is probably in pain. Poor thing.

I've had this happen before, it's not too unusual.

The peroxide is good, and neosporin too, but don't wrap it, just let it be exposed to the air. Do peroxide a couple times a day and make sure it's clean after he uses the litter box.

The nail will grow back in, you need to just treat the surface as it heals, keeping bacteria at a minimum. He likely had a problem with the nail and got it off, so it's set to heal now.

Get your cat to a vet ASAP!!! A decent vet would work with you on ways to pay your bill, rather than letting a cat suffer!!! Contact your local PAWS and ask them if they can recommend somebody who takes on low-income cases.

Borrow money from your friends, from your parents, or try to get an advance on your paycheck. You need to get your kitty to the vet NOW!!! Obviously, he is in pain. Would you want to suffer like he is?? It must have hurt pretty badly for your cat to rip his claw out of his foot like that!!

If you can't afford to take care of your cat when he is sick, find him a home with somebody who can!!

this happened to my cat when she fell off a fence- tore the nail out. keep dipping in peroxide, maybe 3 times a day. check for swelling. if its very tender or swollen get thee to the vet. i didn't think Riviera's would grow back but it eventually did.
