If this were a GM I'd say the park pawl wouldn't lift off the main gear. Can the valve body be removed and flushed of dirt then refilled with new fluid? Where can I find a shop manual on those transmissions? I've put shift kits in TH350's and TH400's so I'm not clueless with transmissions.

In this case it is the low reverse brake on the secondary Planetary gear that is slipping. That is the last thing you get to in that transmission. Lot's harder than just removing the valve body and shift kit install. Start shopping transmission shops maby there is one in a corner some where to replace that 21 year old (let's party) transmission. Inspect the pan and filter for metal and excessive clutch material and burnt smell.

You do not say how many miles are on it. Have you ever replaced the filter, gasket and fluid in it. I might be low on fluid.
