My car was purchased and registered in NJ. I am stationed in SC and i recently was told i need to put a plate on the front of my car. Now i know that you need to put 2 plates on when in NJ, but does that law apply for me down here too. If you can answer this question, please provide reasoning why your answer is correct?

Yes put the second plate on.

Reason.... you have it registered in a 2 plate jurisdiction. You have to follow the laws for where it is registered, not where you have it.

Therefore you are in violation of the law of the state of registration and can be ticketed in all states and in Canada as the vehicle is missing a plate.

We found this out when travelling and lost a plate. Officers pointed out that since the vehicle was registered in a 2 plate state, we had to have both plates, even though we were in a one plate state. To avoid a ticket we had to report plate missing and carry a copy of the police report to show other officers until we could obtain a new set of plates (which by the way you have a limited time to do).

I'd think that you would have to have both plates on your car, because; 1. The state of New Jersey issues two plates. 2. In this way the police know that you are not driving two cars, with one plate on each, therefore one is not legally registered.

If you were issued two plates, you must use them both since your state obviously requires two, or they wouldn't have issued two. The fact that some other state you are in on doesn't require two plates doesn't give you the right to take one off.

If your state of registration issues 2 plates, it expects you to display two plates.
