You answered your own question, when your friends are there you want to show off a little with out making it obvious your system reacts to this and puts out a little more adrenalin, or hormones and you can go that extra weight. The other times even when your friends may not be there you may be a little more tired than you think, or your mind has other things more important to think on so your system can and will react to that too. Your diet can also impact you capabilities. Are you only lifting weights once a week? that can make a difference also. Even if you don't try for the full/normal amount you lift, lifting once mid week will keep your muscles more stable and toned.

that happens to me all the time. I can usually tell when I'm not up to full snuff. It could be simply when you lift- do you lift at the same time everyday? It could be the amount of sleep you had the night before. It could be what you ate (or didn't eat).
It is a bit frustrating. Sometimes you just need a day or two off to restock your energy. One weird thing that happened to me was I took an entire month off and did nothing but eat pizza and get fat. Then when I finally returned to the gym I could bench 20lbs more.

Well, for me it's not benching, it's crunches. Some days I can do more than other days. I noticed sometimes I do less crunches because my abdominal muscles have not fully recuperated from the last workout, so I might have to wait a couple of days before I can do as many as I can do when my muscles are not tired out. I guess it must be the same for all muscles.

I think frame of mind has allot to do with it.
Like sometimes when I'm in a good and energetic mood (even if I had little to eat that day) I have bench pressed 40lbs extra with ease for ten reps , compared to other days when I'm rested and have eaten well the whole day. I might barley do two with the extra 40lbs. It puzzles me too. But I do notice that I am always in a motivated mood when I do them easily.

Do you always do your bench press at the same point in your workout?
I mean if you work other muscle groups in the same workout do you always do bench first or do you sometimes maybe do shoulders first?
That can make a difference

a decrease in functional strength is the first sure sign of overtraining. it's definetly time to take a couple of weeks off, let your body decondition and in that time work on developing an improved training program and diet.

i think your diet and exercise plan arethe problem. after years your only benching 235 lbs. maybe you need to rethink your program? are you eating enough? are you getting enough protein? enough vitamins and mineral? amino acids? are you getting enough rest? theres alot of things that could be the problem. maybe you have less fear when you have a spotter around?

Sounds like your muscles have gotten too large and are shrinking your brain. Judging from your spelling and grammar, it may be too late. Stop now.
