only 3.8 quarts. You haven't tried to pull the dip stick tube out yet have you? Pliers can crush the tube and the dip stick will never pass the narrowed area. The yellow plastic gets brittle and just touch the ring and it breaks off. If the tube is intact you can pinch off the PCV hose and pull the Vent hose drivers side of the valve cover and use compressed air to blow the stick out but no more than 30 psi please! a little motor oil down the dipstick tube helps lubricate and seal the old stick. drape a shop towell over the dipstick tube it sometime the dip stick really shoots out. The safer method is vacuum cleaner and multiable rubber hose size to adapt the dip stick tube to vacuum. About all you can destroy is the valve cover gasket and cause a oil leak. Using the air hose and blower nozzel.

I use 4 quarts in mine without issue. My dipstick also broke off at the handle. When I tried to remove it from the tube with needle nose pliers I succeeded in pushing it down further. I then read a suggestion on a message board to use a dowel with superglue on the end to attach to the end of the dipstick to pull it out. Worked like a champ. Might be worth a try before trying some other more expensive means.

Good luck.

So is it broken off in the dip stick tube. If it is and since it is a Nissan flaw. I would take it to your local dealership and have them fix it. Most engines no more then five quarts. Your problem lies with the dip stick being broken off. I am not sure how you can tell.

You can easily call or bring it to a mechanic and they can tell you for SURE, and you won't second guess yourself.
