Report the shop to the health inspector of town or village it is located in.

The first one to talk to is the manager, when you RETURN the nasty food. If the manager seems unresponsive and doesn't offer a replacement, get in touch with the area manager, who can be reached either with an 800 phone number posted in the store or you can look up the company online and write a letter of complaint to them. Include any information you can about what happened. If you knew the manager's name who wasn't helpful, the store's ID number and phone number (off the receipt), or the store's address, it would help a lot in getting your letter forwarded to the right person.

If you or your friend shop there often, check the food before you leave. Check expiration dates, check for dents in packages, cans and bottles, and check for leaks as well.

Often the drinks are stocked by the company who makes that product, especially drinks. You may want to send the packet to the company -- there should be a phone number or address on the packaging that says "If you are not satisfied with this product call/write us at ..." If the vendor isn't doing a good job maintaining his/her company's product at the store, he/she needs to be alerted that they better improve or get another job. When you send in the package, make sure you name where you bought it and when. Sending a copy of the receipt would be a great idea. That way the company that hires the vendors can talk to the manager of that vendor and deal with it that way.

But that's usually the way it is done. Always start with trying to get a replacement and then go from there if they don't respond in a positive way.

If you feel the shop is selling out of date items then you can report it to the food standards agency or your local enviromental health agency at the council.

Realistically thought the store in question would need to be selling alot of out of date stuff or the level of cleaning in the store would need to be poor to get a bollocking from the council, if its a one off mistake then i suggest he takes it back to the store for a refund/exchange.

Report it to the Health Department.

Also if he has still got the carton return it to the manufacturers with a note as to why he is returning it.

They don't like bad publicity and will refund him + postage and most likely extra voucher or cheque for bringing it to their attention (Quality Control not doing their job properly).

If you're in the UK it will be Trading Standards. You could also try your local Council or Environmental Health Department.

You could start with the Environmental Health department of your local council, if its not them, they will be able to tell you who to contact and have the available numbers.

Call the Health Department and the Better Business Bureau. Both will investigate this place, and possibly shut it down, if they find more evidence.

Good luck.
