My sister really dislikes (may even say hates) vegetables and because we are roommates it's often hard to cook meals together (as I like a wider variety though am perhaps equally picky with some veggies like green beans, eww!), However, we both LOVE fruit, strawberries, blueberries, grapes, etc. "They" say to have 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables a day, but must that be BOTH fruit and vegetables or can one have just fruit, in high quantities, but no veggies?

PS Any tips on getting a veggie-hater to not hate veggies? I just got her to start eating broccoli, but I think she still gags...???

Okay, I have actually wondered this myself, as I do not hate veggies, but find it hard to end up eating them a lot time. However, I find that I eat a lot of fruit, so I wondered exactly what you are asking about whether it has to be both or not. So, I will be interested to see what other people say.

The only thing I can think of why you really need the veggies, is because there are A LOT of nutrients in the green, leafy stuff. They are extremely good for you and you will not get that same nutrition anywhere else. But still, I want to see what others say.

On the how to get her to eat more veggies thing, I answered a similar question about a picky child. Here is basically what I told them and you can use it if it applies.

Obviously, you can't use this every day, because you don't want to eat something like this all the time. If she/they will eat spaghetti or lasagne or something like that that has tomato sauce in it, just take a bunch of veggies, like broccoli, zucchini, onions, pepper, whatever you would normally put in there. Take them and blend them up in the blender until smooth and then add them to the sauce.

I had a friend who did this for her picky child and it worked really well. The thing is that this child did not like the chunks, so he would freak out if he found things in his spaghetti. Well, when she blended it up, it was still there, but no chunks. It made her feel a lot better about getting him some more nutrition. For him, taste was not the issue, it was the chunks.

I suppose you could experiment with different levels of this concept.

Anyway, that is the only idea I have for you on that. Like I said before, probably best if you could get some green stuff in, but eating fruit is better than eating junk food any day!!!

Good luck and I will be looking back at this one to see what great ideas other people have.

as a veggie lover married to a veggie hater, i would sugest having her try a bite of a vegetable and seeing if she can come up with a couple that she likes. My spouse likes beans, carrots, corn and will eat peas on occasion.

don't try to hide the veggies as your sister will think you are being mean by forcing them on her, but try a variety with a dip or melted cheese.

On the downside of this, if your sister does not eat her vegetables, she can end up like my sister in law who at age 35 had to have all the bones in her lower jaw replaced because she did not eat her veggies.

good luck to you and your sister!

i don't think having 9 servings of just fruit is healthy. it contains alot of sugar that will be made into fat if eaten in large quantities. i'd recomend 5 servings of fruit a day and 2-4 servings of veggies if you prefer fruit to veggies. good luck with your room-mate. how can she hate veggies they're YUMMY! :D

I am not particularly fond of cooked veggies, but I like them raw with dip. Melted cheese on things like broccoli and cauliflower is pretty good.
