Only one of the godparents must be fully confirmed and actively practicing the Catholic faith. The other can be a little less involved...though one hopes that the honor and responsibility of being chosen godparent will inspire them to become more active in their faith.

This is a question you need to ask your priest, not post on a message board where people who don't know about it want to criticize you. Talk to your priest to find out if this person can be a godparent, and then take it from there. You should always have a second choice, in case someone doesn't want to participate.

I've known people who have had godparents, but in the religions that I've practiced, this has never been a part of them.

While you are planning the confirmation, you should also check into the laws of your state to find out what would happen to your child if both of his parents were not around to raise him. In some states, you need a will to specify who is to become guardian of your child. In some states, you also need a will to specify that the surviving parent gets custody of the child in case one parent dies. In either case, if no will has been filed, the state takes custody of the child while the court decides who becomes the child's guardian.

That is one of the worst sins, your whole family, and all of theirs will inevitably pay the price of purgatory at least.
