Which has more stoping power, a 1911 Colt .45 or an 1858 Reghminton .44 revolver?
This is assuming the colt is using factory ammunition, and the remington is using a conical projectile with 30 grains of fffg. Does anyone know? Thanks!

I shot a 8x8 pine beam with my 1858 Remington from 15 feet away. The ball penetrated thru it completely. This was with maximum powder charge. I do not under estimate the 1858,but I think .45 acp would be more powerful under the scenario you describe.

Which has the most Stopping power 45 ACP.
That big slow moving bullet gives it a lot of thump.

As to muzzle velocity the 44 with 30 gr fffg is a head by a nose.

It's so close you'd have to chronograph the two pistols to be sure, if using a heavy bullet in the Remington. It usually uses smaller, lightweight, balls, though, so the edge goes to the ACP by a bit. On the other hand, a heavy-loaded Walker Colt beats both. One shouldn't discount the capabilities of the old black-powder arms.

It would be a pretty near run thing, expecially if you are comparing a conical lead ball to a 230 gr. FMJ.

I believe that only with more modern hollowpoint loadings would the .45 ACP widen the gap over the cap-and-ball revolver.

So, I'd say:

Cap-and-ball versus .45 ACP FMJ, about equal.

Cap-and-ball versus CCI Lawman 200 gr. JHP - ACP wins

Cap-and-ball versus Federal 230 gr. Hydro-Shok - ACP Wins.

it depends on the loading of the 45acp. You forgot to mention this as criteria. Of course a 30fffg .451-.454" lead slug will be more powerful than a 45acp 230gr fmj. and what about barrel length? The 45auto has 5'or less while almost every 1858 has a barrel that is 7" long. Let's shoot a 185gr+p 45auto out of a 7" barrel and the results might be different.

The .45 ACP will come out the winner in this discussion in most circumstances.yw
