Does it make a difference if you do or do not, let off of brakes? I had heard before it helps, but then heard differently.

YES! If you go over bumps with your foot pressed down on the brakes it can hurt your car. Slow down before the tracks and let up on the brake before you go over them.

Sounds like another old wives tale to me,
when I learned to drive trucks 35 years ago, I was told to drop the truck into neutral when crossing a rail crossing, otherwise I could do damage to the gearbox.
So by their figuring, it's safer and cheaper to let 50+ tons freewheel????
I have never freewheeled over a crossing, and if I need to use my brakes I will.
vehicles can be repaired, killing someone to save your gearbox is stupidity.

of course any time you don't use the brakes saves them a little
