When you go to mass and the money collection is brought up to the alter, what do you think people gave as an offering before they had money. I ask because i had a giggle at mass today thinking of them old men dragging up sacks of spuds and dead pigs etc

IN the Middle Ages people were expected (made) to give ten per cent of their income to the Church, hence the building of Tithe barns where the crops were stored. The Church of England has in recent years tried to sell this to it's members as a good idea. Folk memory remembers how unpopular this tax was. Indeed it was part of the reason why King Henry V111 got away with the dissolution of The Monasteries

What ever valuables they had. In the Old Testament, (Before the birth of Jesus) people burned the first fruits of their crops and offered the best animal they had.

That is a funny picture, but I guess that would be true of the church long ago. They would give from their land.
