I want to run a marathon before I turn 27. I am willing to do a 1/2 marathon b/c it would still be an accomplishment. How far exactly is 1/2 marathon and how can I get started training? How long will it take me to train?

I made a goal this year to run a half marathon too! I ran it in May and it was FANTASTIC (I'm also running one this Saturday and another in Oct- I think I may be addicted ;D)

I started training the first week of Dec. for my May race. I used the Hal Higdon Half Marathon Training for Novices.
It assumes you'll be able to run 3 miles from the beginning and takes 12 weeks.

I wanted to start out a little slower to make sure I was injury free come half marathon day... so I started with the 5K training guide and then moved into the Half Marathon training guide. This is a 8 week long program.

In total it took me 20 weeks to train- and I felt GREAT race day. Good Luck!!

Here is the website for the Half Marathon Training Guide
http://www.halhigdon.com/halfmarathon/novice.htm
-on that page you'll find the link to the 5K training...

I highly recommend a half marathon- it's challenging and you have such a sense of accomplishment, yet it's also very doable... Have fun!!

Not to be funny but 1/2 the distance of a full marathon, or 13.1 miles. Your current fitness level will determine how long it will take you to train, and what type of training you will start with. Just be safe and enjoy the experience. Kenny (50 state marathoner)
