Here is what Royal Caribbean has posted on its web site for the cruise of the Freedom this week, starting Aug 19th:

"Freedom of the Seas, will depart the Port of Miami Sunday, August 19, as scheduled. The ship is currently expected to sail its scheduled itinerary. The ship's itinerary is subject to change based on possible storm-related damage to Jamaica, the Cayman Islands and Mexico. Should the aftermath of Hurricane Dean prevent the ship from visiting these locations, alternative ports of call would be sought. As weather conditions involving the storm are constantly changing, guests booked on this sailing are asked to continue monitoring these updates to receive the latest information. Guests also may contact Royal Caribbean at 1-800-327-6700 to receive these updates."

My bet is that they will sail the itinerary in the reverse order that we sailed it last year and go first to Jamaica and then the Cayman Islands and Cozumel last, assuming the damage on these islands is not extensive. If there is damage to the islands and ports they will probably do an Eastern CAribbean itinerary and go to St Thomas and St Maarten and maybe Puerto Rico.

Most of us in the travel industry cruise during Hurricane season. The rates are the best and if there is a hurricane the ship will navigate around the storm. You would be much better off this week sailing on the Freedom of the Seas than being booked at an all-inclusive in Cancun.

As a cruiser, you have to realize that for paying the discounted hurricane season rates one of the risks is that your itinerary could change without any notice. But this is much better then being stuck on island with a storm heading straight for you. And since you have been on the Freedom of the Seas, you know that the ship itself is a destination so if you miss one port it would not ruin your vacation. the Cruise lines are also very good about offering On Board Credits or future cruise discounts when the itinerary does change. Although the cruise lines do have the right to change itineraries at any point without having to do anything in repayment for the passengers.

From my experience, I also fully recommend travel insurance during hurricane season. It will protect your investment against inclement weather, medical emergencies, and deaths in the family.
