What is a "Dana 44 Front End" and what does it do?
I just bought a '96 Dodge Ram 1500 and my uncle told me the guy put a lot of stuff on it including a Dana 44 Front end. What does that mean? What is that? What does it do?

it is basically a four wheel drive front axle setup that is used on most ford and dodge pickup trucks.it is a solid axle of course. if your truck is a 2WD you got a lot of work ahead of you , but if you got the 4X4 already you can get the axle and work on getting it put on your truck with minimum modifications

Dana Corporation is publicly traded - the stock ticker is DCN. They have been making an axle that size since the 1950's (I have one) but the new ones are quite a bit heavier than those were. Spicer is also part of Dana. Your truck probably has a lot of their parts on it.

It's a great axle, but not optional. It's just a regular piece of equipment you'd find in a 1500 pickup. Model 44 is the size.

Older jeeps used the Dana 30, and a 2500 pickup takes a Dana 60. They also make a 70, which is something you'd find on a 3500 pickup.

Dana makes front and rear drive axles for vehicles. 44 Front "End" refers to a particular model axle used to power the front wheels. Google "Dana 44 Front End" for all sorts of info re. modifications to various vehicles w/ Dana components.
