There are three camera performance issues to consider in the circumstances you describe.

First, you want a camera that supports continuous auto-focus, where the camera will continue to adjust the focus as the subject moves towards or away from the photographer. If the auto-focus only supports a single focus, a fast moving object could move out of focus in the time it takes for shutter release.

Second, you want as little shutter lag as possible. Some of the shutter lag is due to the auto-focus, so if you address that, you will have gone some way to reducing shutter lag as well.

Third, you will need a camera with a relatively high shutter speed if you want to stop motion, particularly if you want to be relatively close to the subject. If you are close and the subject is fast, you might need to be considering shutter speeds above 1/1000s.

The final issue is not about the camera, but the photographer, and developing the skills, not only the operate the camera but to select shooting positions and angles that give your photographs a little more edge.

Go to shutterbug.com and Search for their review of the Pentax K10D (Aug. 2007 issue).

Whatever camera you buy you should visit cameraarmor.com and bonicadive.com and choose the best protective cover they offer for your particular camera. Make sure its highly water resistant since water and electronics don't play well together.

You should also invest in a Skylight 1B filter to protect the front element of your lens and to remove the bluish tint seen in shaded areas of trees and snow.
