can she take the cat back to the vets? they might be able to do a post-mortem on the cat and see what happened. if it was related to the stitches then she can sue. if they cant or wont do the post-mortem, you might still be able to. talk to the vet and tell him what happened. poor kitty and you and your friend! :(

That is so sad, please give your freind my deepest condolences for her loss. You are a good friend to care enough to ask why.
There are many possibilities, if she really wants answers though, she get a necropsy done on the cat's body. It's an autopsy for animals. That is probably the only way you will know for sure.
Here are the first few possible reasons that come to mind for me:
1. Shock.
2. Blood clot from the tail travelled to a vital organ and made it fail. Usually this happens in the heart, lungs or brain.
3. Unnoticed spinal cord injury. The cat could have hurt it's spinal column when it pulled away when it's tail was stuck and caused damages high enough up the neck to lead to paralysis and thus respiratory failure.
4. Allergic reaction to drugs given to it while at the vet.
5. Unnoticed internal injuries. It's possible more than the tail was crushed in the incident. A good vet at a good emergency clinic would have done full body x-rays at least, and preferably a mri or cat scan, and checked the abdomen with ultrasound, but not all vets have this equipment available to them. Thus, sometimes things are missed.
As for her sueing, sueing isn't the answer. If she wishes to approach it this way, she will HAVE to have a necropsy done to prove the fault was on the vet. Have a different vet do this, to eliminate tampering with the results. IF this turns up something that the other vet was neglient to find, then she can report the vet to the veterinary medical association, and all other associations he/she is a member of. If the evidence is strong, the vet could lose his/her license to practice medicine. If she would rather gain money (I assume that's the only good reason to ever "sue" anyone) than find justice, she can always NOT turn the vet in, but instead use the threat of it to extort money from the vet to "replace" her cat. That, IMO, would be dishonest though.

I have heard cats and other pets are considered property. Therefore any court would only award you based on your pet's worth. Unless you have a champion pet, horse, steer etc then no judge in this country will hear you or award any damages. Sorry to say that....I am a pet owner myself and understand they are part of the family but there are no explicit laws to sue vets for malpractice. You may be able to complain to a vet medical board or a better business bureau if you think the vet was negligent. I would ask about negotiations on the bill though...good luck and I am sorry for your friend's loss.

sounds like more than just the tail was injured...probably had some internal injuries or she could have had a heart attack from the stress of everything she had been through...so sorry for your friends loss ...hope this helps...:
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

She can not sue, because it isn't their fault. They can't be totally sure what is wrong with the animal, because they are not the animal themselves. If it was caused by the stitches or something then yes she could sue. Maybe he died from shock? I am sorry about your cat, but I really don't know how he died. Sorry.

I am so sorry for your friend and you. Apparently the cat had internal injuries that no one could see and she didn't show any signs of any problems. I certainly would call the vet that saw her and he might want to see the kitty, but I doubt if you could sue.

Its probably not worth it to sue the vet for money, but definitely file a charge against them for malpractice. In my area, I would file a report at the avma or cvma and they would be required to investigate.
Find another vet to look at your records and give you an opinion. If you dont, somebody elses pet could suffer like yours.
Good Luck

The cat should have been taken directly back to the vets, they missed something. An autopsy is standard. I know it won't help but when a diagnosis goes this wrong they need to know about it.

Have the cat necropsied by a different vet. DON'T have the same vet you are thinking of suing do the necropsy. Have everything documented then talk to an attorney.

tell him ya so!! If he became became off by skill of it, he might have in simple terms disregarded you and not teased you approximately it. tell him, he'd be an fool to not understand you have been crushing on him, and your in simple terms sorry it took you writing a word to discern it out. yet you gotta say it with a grin and a touch appealing attitude. do not act bizarre or diffrent....believe me, he teased you approximately it, that's ok. Now bypass ask him what he's gonna do approximately it, or, I desire the ambitious approach, and in simple terms provide him a huge ole kiss and get it over with...sturdy success
