after a storm that affected only one of your sets, implies that the directv is still working... your tv is on, you can change channels, yet you just get sound.

your picture tube is blown (if the set is that old), or someone has played with the settings on the set.

Directv sends picture with the sound, so it's probably not the satellite connection.

Let us know the brand and the age of the dead set. It may be time for a new set.

what both of the previous answers are lacking is the possibility that your DirecTV signal isn't being sent to or decoded by your box properly. Remember, your receiver is just like a computer and one of its processes might have gotten messed up or stopped completely. The following steps are the same that you'd be asked to do if you called in for help.

Try resetting the receiver. If it's a DirecTV model you can open the panel on the front right hand side and push the red RESET button. Otherwise you will need to unplug it for 15 seconds and then plug it back in. Once your box restarts (it will take 2-5 minutes, depending on the model) the picture should come in.

If not, go to DirecTV.com, click "Customer Service" on the menu on the left, then click "Troubleshooting" from the options it gives you and then "refresh my services." If you have not set up a directv.com account yet, this is a good time to do so. If you have, then log in. What this does is it refreshes the signal being sent to all of the receivers in your home, and this could help solve the problem as well. (as a side note, when you call in for help, the CSR you speak to can do this from their computer, but oftentimes it's quicker to go online and do this yourself than wait on hold for someone to do it for you)

If not, reset your receiver again.

From here it's a lot of checking cables and whatnot, and the troubleshooting rarely gets this far. If you do need more help, you can try calling 1-800-531-5000 for technical help, and go ahead and let them know exactly what steps you took.

junior has a point,
if one set works and one doesn't it is probably the set.

BUT...
to say that the pic tube is blown is unknowledgeable.

it could be, it could also be the high voltage, the video, and a host of other things.

start by connecting the tv to the cable the runs the other set to eliminate anything in the cabling.

if that doesn't work, put a cat or your hair near the pic tube to detect high voltage.
If there is HV then it is probably a video circuit. potentially the least expensive to fix.
