An insurance salesman came to the door and asked the woman of the house if she would like to buy some insurance for her family.She said yes. The salesman then said, "How many children do you have?" She replied 3. The salesman then asked "what ages are the children"? "That is getting too personal" she replied. "WIll you give me a clue" the salesman asked. "If you add the ages of my children togethr they will equal the address of my next door neighbor". The salesman runs quickly next door and returns. He is panting as he says, I
need one more clue. The woman smiles and says, "My oldest child plays the piano." Do you know the ages of the children?
and can someone please explain how they figured it out?

You have to take everything into account since it's not specified. We don't know how old this woman is, so we *have* to assume she can be any age. This means her age could be, let's say 16 years greater than each of her children.
Yes, this is assuming she had her first child when she was 16.....it is a blind guess.
Let's say she has a max age that puts her in her 90's. This means her children *could* all be in their 70's. Highly unlikely.....YES, but we don't know that in setting up the parameters of this problem.
This means her youngest child could be say 77, then her next oldest sibling is 78, and the next is 79, and the mom is 16 yrs older than the oldest child: 79 + 16 = 95.
I could be mistaken, but am going on what I think is the correct format for addresses in the USA. Opposite sides of the street are based on odd and even numbered addresses. So adjacent addresses on the same side of the street have to be 2 digits apart regardless if it's an odd or even address.
So the neighbor has an address of x.....the house in question is x + 2.
So...what we know is:
Childrens' ages: a + b + c = d
a = child #1's age (which we don't know)
b = child #2's age (which we don't know)
c = child #3's age (which we don't know)
d = neighbor's address....which we don't know.
Now, unless there is some sociological fact about a child's age and piano lessons that I don't know about, I cannot come up with a connection with this clue.
There is one equation (a + b + c = d) and 4 unknowns.....this is what we geeks call an undetermined system, which, in layman's terms means, we have more unknown facts than we do known facts, so it is not possible to solve this with what is given.
Unless there is some clever person out there that can synthesize this information into something more fruitful than what I have, you have a problem/riddle with no solution.
Bummer...cuz it seems like a cool one to try and work out.
:)

Not enough information I'm afraid but on the assumption that he had to go next door to see the number it's possible her house didn't have one. Therefore she could live in a vicarage. The oldest plays the piano so must be at least 7. The other two are younger so on the assumption there is at least a year between them and she has now reached her change of life she will be aged about 50. If she married the vicar and didn't practice birth control she would have had one child a year. They are now aged 7, 6, and 5 so next door's number is 18.

you're able to take each thing into consideration simply by fact that's not distinctive. we don't understand how previous this lady is, so we *have* to assume she would be any age. this means her age ought to be, enable's say sixteen years better than each of her toddlers. confident, that's assuming she had her first new child while she became sixteen.....it quite is a blind guess. enable's say she has a max age that places her in her ninety's. this means her toddlers *ought to* all be of their 70's. fantastically not likely.....confident, yet we don't understand that throughout installation the parameters of this problem. this means her youngest new child ought to be say seventy seven, then her next oldest sibling is seventy 8, and the subsequent is seventy 9, and the mummy is sixteen yrs older than the oldest new child: seventy 9 + sixteen = ninety 5. i ought to be incorrect, yet am occurring what i think of is the final format for addresses interior the country. opposite facets of the line are consistent with atypical or perhaps numbered addresses. So adjoining addresses on the comparable element of the line could be 2 digits aside regardless if that's an atypical or perhaps address. So the neighbor has an address of x.....the abode in question is x + 2. So...what all of us understand is: teenagers' a while: a + b + c = d a = new child #a million's age (which we don't understand) b = new child #2's age (which we don't understand) c = new child #3's age (which we don't understand) d = neighbor's address....which we don't understand. Now, except there is a few sociological actuality a pair of youngster's age and piano training that i don't understand approximately, i won't arise with a connection with this clue. there is one equation (a + b + c = d) and four unknowns.....that's what we geeks call an undetermined device, which, in layman's words skill, we've greater unknown info than we do widely used info, so that's not conceivable to clean up this with what's given. except there is a few sensible guy or woman obtainable that can synthesize this coaching into something greater fruitful than what I quite have, you have a difficulty/riddle without answer. Bummer...cuz it variety of appears like a cool one to purpose and paintings out. :)
