ignore silly answers above

the world labor market is competitive. the key elements in compensation are hours worked, learning used on the job, equipment used on the job, and [small item] health.

back in the day, America was far and away the world leader in education -- learning used on the job by the typical worker, and in equipment used on the job per worker.

equipment isn't true any longer and we're not as far ahead in education, so the relative value of our output isn't as high as it used to be.

[not to mention that the defacto exclusion of women from the work force reduced supply and this increased the price that men's labor commanded.]

what you can do about it is to learn more and keep learning more.

if you don't want to, that's ok with me -- just learn some Chinese or Korean on the side -- enough to say "yes, Master" for starters.
