if you are heart healthy there is no reason to exercise at a low level of intensity.

the only way to make continued progress of any kind in the gym is by constantly increasing the intensity of training but keeping the training time the same. for cardio you want to constantly increase the distance traveled. so if today you run 5 miles in 20 minutes the next cardio day you want to hit 5.1-5.2 miles, the next session 5.3, etc. when you exercise at a high level of intensity the body will utilize glucose as the primary energy source since the body can not metabolize enough free fatty acids to keep up with the demand of ATP required by skeletal muscle to contract. this accomplishes two very important tasks. first it helps to deplete muscle glycogen so when carbohydrates are ingested any excess glucose will be stored in skeletal muscle and not spill over which leads to fat storage. the more glucose that is utilized during exercise the greater the amounts of free fatty acids used in the hours after exercise. after a session of high intensity exercise the body increases oxygen consumption in an attempt to restore the body to the pre-exercise state. this is what causes the increase in the resting metabolic rate for hours after exercise, where the real fat loss takes place.

low intensity cardio in the "fat burning" zone is an antiquated and outdated methodology that has been proven time and time again to be inferior to high intensity exercise. it's kind of a no-brainer, do low intensity cardio and burn fat during exercise with no increase in the resting metabolic rate after. or high intensity exercise which causes the resting metabolic rate to remain elevated for 4-6 hours after exercise.

depends what you are exercising for. running and losing less calories is more of a cardio (heart) workout while walking at an incline is more of a fat-burning workout. You should try running on an incline-then you get the best of both worlds.

the more calories you burn the better... it all depends on what you want to do. Are you looking to be in better shape or just looking to drop a few lbs?

If your looking to drop a few lbs, then limit calorie intake, stop eating after 7 at night, and do whatever walking or running you would like. Once you do this for about 2 weeks, you get used to it, and really start to see a change...

It depends what your goals are. Exercising at a lower intensity (walking) for longer periods of time will burn more fat. Higher intensity exercise (running) will increase your strength more.
