hi there i need to remove my existing car stereo at night due to fear of it getting nicked. i was wondering if it's possible to get a cage that slides into place and can be removed when needed.obviously it would need cennection points at the back for the power and speaker connections too.

Rather than remove the whole unit, have you considered a stereo where the face removes. Most theives won't steal it because of the hassle in getting a new front for it.

Alot of the stereos you get nowadays have this as a feature and you can get something really decent, without worrying too much about getting it nicked.

Most also come with a case and are small enough to fit in a jacket pocket, which means when you are out you can leave your car without taking a rather large item into the pub with you (to get knicked off of you or from your glovebox, under seat etc)

With most modern cars, the stereo unit is built into the dashboard, which makes it basically unknickable, whereas anything with a cage will need access to the back to take apart the electric clips - damage and wear and tear my become a problem here.

Try some stereo shops and stereo sites---I know that in the mid-90's, Isuzu has removable radio's like you describe in their Amigo trucks with the softtop in case someone cut the top, they would not get the radio if the owner removed it.. Most car stereo companies just sell radio's with removeable faceplates to deter theft. And some stereo shops can hide a head unit out of sight or in a more secure area and have it operate by remote.

Why not just purchase a alarm. There are alarms available with portable beeper to let you know someone is attempting to enter your vehicle if you can not hear the alarm siren.
