Intel is a many-headed beast. However, the chances of him going in harms way are somewhat slim- howere that varies as to his skills and his exact job description. Does he speak a foreign language? If so, depending on that language, he could be listening to radio/cell-phone traffic; or be an interpreter...not all interpreters get dangerous jobs. Or if he can read and write that language- he could deal with documents.
Just respect his duties, and don't ask questions he really isn't supposed to answer. And if he does, don't blab them on the internet.
And just because someone joins the military, it doesn't mean they are killers, mentally unstable or stupid. It takes brains to operate many of these systems, and if you are a gang-banging, semi-literate drop-out....you day is basically gone.
You don't have to support the war...but support the gays and gals who are trying to make a difference. Don't believe the crap you get from the news...mainstream, CNN, FOX or'Net.
Talk to those who have been there...not all of the Iraqis hate us, many love us, and try to do what is right for all...but bear in mind that for decades, the Iraqi people were haunted by not only tribal and religious difference that are ages old, but numerous secret police operatives, Fedayeen cowards who are brave only when wearing a skimask and torturing those wrapped in barbed-wire...they still terrorize the local poputaions, and added to the bullshit of Shitte vs Sunni vs Kurd vs (fill-in-the-blank) no wonder no one trusts Muslims.
And never believe any of the bullshit Al-Jazzera puts out.

If he is in Basic or Avanced Individual Training it will be awhile before he would go to his next post and be deployed. Any soldier who is there in Iraq and Afganistan has a risk involved but just like the other guy said your more likely to die in a car crash or at the hands of a drunk driver. It only seems like alot of people die overthere because the media publicieses eveyy death over there. He in the States 100's of people die daily from Cancer, Aids, car acidents, and countless other ways. It just not made as public.
From my 4 deployments, 2 of them Iraq, I can say that the job does not determin his likelyhood off something bad happening. We had cooks on potrols with us. And they served bravely right beside the Engineers who actually hunted for the IED's. They all made it home safe in the end. Somethings may happen but the likelyhood of something like that happening is slim. You need to talk to other wifes and get advice on how to cope. If he is in a unit already or when he gets therem you need to be active in the Family Readiness Group a, a support group for military wifes. Just remember if you are stable his mind may not be in the game and it could be costly. So be strong for your man and give him all your support. The hardest job in the Army is being a Army wife. Good luck and God Bless you and your Husband!!

All soldiers have a chance to be in combat, in our current war that is even more so because of a lack of a front line.
But you have to keep a level of perspective.
1) If he is not yet deployed, he is not in combat.
2) If he does go to combat, a person in intelligence usually supports the troops and is not out looking for the enemy like the combat arms troops are.
3) The chance of being killed in combat for a soldier is about 1/2 of the chance of being killed car accident.
My advice to you is that you first learn the facts so you don't overly panic your family and his family.
Second, you need to figure out if you love this guy no matter what. If you can't handle the risks of his profession, then the bond may not be strong enough.
Lastly, think of him. If he is worrying about you worrying about him, then he is not focused on his training and his job. Your focus needs to be on how you can support him so he will be in the best position to come home safe.

Depends on the unit he is assigned to. MI types are usually guarded (due to thier expert(?) skills and the cost of training them) by a large security force of grunts (due to thier expert skills in combat operations (ie shooting) and the low cost of training them).......In other words MI guys are less likely to be in a direct firefight because:
1) Combat operations are not thier primary job, intelligence analysis / gathering is.
2) They are a higher value then the average grunt guarding them is and therefore less expendable so they are far more likely NOT to be in a serious long term firefight.
3) Most MI guys just do analysis of information. They sit thier fat asses back in the air conditioning on the FOB (foward operating base) and let the grunts go out. Then when the grunts get back from patrol the MI guys ask questions like; "what was the mood of the locals" or "did you notice anything out of the ordinary at location XYZ". Thus most grunts have a low opinion of MI types because they are for the most part FOBBITS (people who NEVER leave the FOB).

Folks in MI usually work in the rear, so he won't be deployed in house-to-house searches or expected to defend in a foxhole with the infantry, unless he screws up and gets KP.
He will be living the good life, probably in Kuwait where there is no action.
They call it "in harm's way" but, like the Navy, that usually means you spend the war on a ship 30 miles away from land doing the pilots' laundry or swabbing decks.

FYI , Back in the 1950's and early 60's I was in a branch of the "military intelligence", but not knowing the branch or the job / MOS, I can give this answer, as it applied at that time, however, I do believe the same holds true today !!! In the sections dealing with Crypto, S.I., D.F., CC, CI, ATI, etc., the standard was :: "FIRST OUT ARE THOSE INVOLVED IN THESE (aforementioned) MOS"S AND THEN EVACUATE THE WOMEN AND CHILDREN" !!!
Relax, even we were first trained to defend ourselves and were well armed !!

More then likely, he will be in a staff job and making products for maps until he gets more experience, then he will start conducting analysis.
I know this is just numbers, but with well over 2 million tours to Iraq and the number of casualties we have had, the chances of him getting hurt are not great. It is no different then drivng a car. Be proud of him, he is doing something for his country as millions have before him.
