A cop pulled me over a couple nights ago for going "roughly 80". The cop took a really negative tone with me because he thought I had a radar detector that I hid when he pulled me over, which I did not. Him and his partner kept making an allusion to me having on and when I insisted I didn’t the officer just got more irritated. I asked the officer if he had even caught me on radar and he told me he did not. When I received the ticket he wrote 80+ on how fast I was going. My question being police can just "guesstimate" your speed? And if I do fight the ticket in court what is my rights on the officer not officially ever getting my speed down?

He probably had to go 80 to catch up to you, you probably hit the brakes when you saw him, so he knows you where going well over 80. Plus, cops are trained ( VASCAR) to visually tell how fast you are going within a few miles an hour. It is very effective an amazes anyone who is trained how to do it. Officers are actually required to visually note your speed and use radar only to confirm it. Bottom line, you where speeding. You will be convicted, you will pay a fine and your insurance will go up. I'd suggest a plea to mitigate the impact. Going into court and challenging the cop will not work well. He will have his schtick down and you will come accross like another disgruntled motorist.

You did not mention the actual limit where you were ticketed. 80+ would be at least 10 MPH over the limit anywhere I know of. Every experienced officer I have ever met can visually determine your speed more accurately than that. If they believed you had a radar detector, they almost certainly saw your brake lights come on BEFORE they 'lit you up'. Pacing is a legitimate method of determining speed in most states. If you challenge the ticket in court, I would bet he will testify you were doing more like 90.

You can always take the ticket to court but the Traffic cop will probably testify that " in his professional opinion" you were going at least 80. He could have also Vascar'ed you, which is another way of estimating someones speed. Best to cunsult a lawyer and fight the ticket that way.. Good Luck

Police Officers can tell roughly how fast you were going by pacing you and look down at the speedometer to tell them how fast you were going. That is probably the case here.

If he didn't have an exact speed on you, then he probably was pacing you. Pacing is a legal and accepted method of speed enforcement.
