John 21:15-17 states:
When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs."
He then said to him a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep."
He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, "Do you love me?" and he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." (Jesus) said to him, "Feed my sheep.
Matthew 16:17-19 states:
Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."
The Catholic Church believes the Lord made Simon alone, whom he named Peter, the "rock" of his Church. He gave him the keys of his Church and instituted him shepherd of the whole flock.
The Pope is the senior pastor of 1.1 billion Catholics, the direct successor of Simon Peter.
The Pope’s main roles include teaching, sanctifying, and governing.

That's Matthew 16:18.
Like all Bible verses, there are various levels of meaning, not the least of which is the fact that the tomb of Saint Peter is located literally beneath Saint Peter's Basilica in Vatican Square.

Jesus was the second person of the Trinity. Jesus had a biological mother but no biological father. Simon Peter was a fisherman he called to be an Apostle. Simon Peter had real parents and was a married man with a mother-in-law. Jesus healed Simon Peter's Mother-in-law.
I'm Roman Catholic and believe Jesus had to turn the job over to mortals.
I believe in God and I believe in Jesus.
I believe if you want to know God, Love God and serve God your on the right path.
The correct path is when our hearts and desires are in alignment with God.

St. Peter did indeed found the Catholic Church and Jesus told him to. Some Protestants and others feel that the teachings of the Church are not compatible with their beliefs and choose to use the Bible more as their source of faith. There is no superior or "right" church. Just do what you think is best for you.
EDIT: Some of the intolerance on these boards is really frustrating to me. Respect is not a difficult concept and even Jesus taught respect for other religions. It's sad to see professed Christians not following Christianity.
I'm a Catholic and proud to be one.

Jesus asked Peter, 3 times, "do you love me?" and each time Peter answered affirmatively. Jesus then said "feed my flock" After the third time, Jesus told Peter "You are my rock and upon this rock I will build my Church and not even the gates of hell shall prevail against it." Now, how many different ways can one take that?
For those who say "you can't take it literally" does that mean you can't take anything in the Bible literally? Well, that would mean that you are not saved then wouldn't it because then Jesus never literally died on the cross?

St Peter and the grace of his office as Pope are the rock(which is what petros or "rockman' means) on which Jesus built His Church. The Catholic Church is that Church and it is the fullest and truest of the many Christian Churches that descend from the Catholic Church.

...you need to understand the Hebrew and Greek lexicon to fully understand the meaning of the "words"... The Catholic Church would like you to think that, however, the actual Greek and Hebrew words say differently... Jesus said upon this Rock (He used the word petra...meaning actual "rock"...(Jesus was referred to as the "Rock" of Salvation)...The Roman Church would have you believe Jesus said "Petre" or "Kefa" (Kefa is Peters actual Hebrew name...that's what Jesus would have called him...as Kefa would have called Jesus "Yeshua")... I will build "my" Church and the gates of hell etc. etc. You see, Yeshua built the Church upon His Word, not the words of Rome or Kefa... The Roman Church would also have you believe that Kefa was the 1st. Pope... (Intresting... Kefa never ever acknowledges that he was such a person or held such a position...intresting enough tho... the first confirmed and identifiable "Popes" were all Jews...(The Roman Church doesn't like to talk about that)...As the followers of "The Way" as it was called worshiped Yeshua according to the Hebrew treditions... The "pomp" and circumstance begn to filter in, as the Hebrew's were persecuted by Rome and "others", seeing how strong this new "Faith" was took it over and established the Church of Rome...the Universal Catholic Church...there is so much more the Church of Rome doesn't want you to know and will strongly argue in their favor... Study the Truth... you'll find what you are seeking...

Correct to many. Too much history for short answer. All the branches from the main trunk of RC is due to misdeeds of human leadership. Worldly desire and all - made people break from RC.
The correct path is still Jewish, Islamic, whatever because it's personal - not whole nations anymore.
Roman Catholics benefit from being the last to actually have the Son of GOD walking among us, freshly as it were, not ages and ages ago, so long the stories sound like stories (fables) and not factual visits.

The only true thing about your statement is that Kepha (Peter) was brutally murdered by the Roman Catholic Church.
This same church was around to kill the Messiah, Yahshua so tell me, why would the savior make them his successor?
Dan 9:26 (Amp) And after the sixty-two weeks of years shall the Anointed One be cut off or killed and shall have nothing and no one belonging to and defending Him (without a successor) . And the people of the [other] prince (Satan) who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. Its end shall come with a flood; and even to the end there shall be war, and desolations are decreed.
History proves that this prophecy was fulfilled by none other then the Roman Catholic Church.
Prophecy also shows when the House of Yahweh would be established, the place where Yahshua worshiped (His Father's House)
ISAYAH 2:2-6
2. It will come to pass in the last days, that the mountain; promotion, of The House of YahÂweh will be established in the chief of the nations, and will be raised above all congregations; and all nations will eventually flow to it.
3. And many people will go and say; Come, and let us go up to the mountain of Yahweh, to the House of the Father of Yaaqob, and He will teach us of His ways, and we will walk in His paths. For the Law will depart from Zion, and the word of Yahweh will depart from Yerusalem.
4. He will judge among the nations, and will rebuke many people; they will beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning-hooks; nation will not lift up sword against nation, neither will they learn war anymore.
5. O house of Yaaqob, come and let us walk in the light of Yahweh.
6. You have forsaken your people, the house of Yaaqob, because they are filled with customs from the east; they are soothsayers like the Philistines, and they are pleased in the children of strangers.
Again I say the Roman Catholic church has been around ever since they murdered the Savior, the apostles, and all of the true followers, and they are certainly not teaching us to walk in Yahweh's ways, they are teaching a form of righteousness and evil a pagan religion full of abominations which creates desolation and this is definitely not what Yahshua established in Kepha.
