Yes, you need to add some liquid........I prefer to use beef broth AND water (beef broth can get a bit salty if it cooks down too much) or another trick is to add a packet of dry onion soup mix (think: Lipton) a cup of water and 3 tablespoons of A1 or Worcestershire sauce, cover it and let it cook for 4-5 hours on High or 8-9 hours on Low......DO NOT OPEN THE CROCK POT DURING COOKING!!! (One of the biggest mistakes people make when using a crock pot!) Every time you lift the lid, add 30 minutes to the cooking time.....if you'd like veggies to go with your roast, I find they come out "mushy" in the crock pot.......I prefer to oven roast my veggies for a roast in the crock......Enjoy!!!

Yes, you should always add some type of liquid - water, broth, sauce, etc. This keeps the roast from drying out.

Here is a super basic crock pot roast recipe:

2 lb. beef pot roast
4 peeled carrots - cut into 2-inch segments
1 cup cold water
3 peeled and quartered onions
6 halved, but not peeled potatoes

Put the vegetables in the bottom of the crockpot.
Cover the vegetables with the meat.
Season meat with salt and pepper
Pour water over meat and vegetables.
Simmer on low for 8 to 10 hours.
Try adding an envelope of onion soup mix, or a small can of whole tomatoes, for variation

This is how I have always made my bbq sandwiches. Put your pork roast in crock pot fatty side up. Then add dry onion soup mix and 2 cups of water. Cook all day (8-10 hours) and drain water at the end. Shred and add your favorite bbq sauce. You can do this with a beef roast too. This way your meat gets very moist. If you don't add water, then use a fattier cut of meat so you can get plenty of liquid to your meat and then spray the bottom of your crock pot dish so it doesn't stick to it if you doing the "dry" method.

YES, I would so that your roast does not dry out. I always put enough in to cover the roast. If not, you will have crusty roast on the top. Add a packet of "French Onion Soup" mix for flavor with the water is always good too!

Rather than adding a lot of water which will actually dilute the mixture and take flavor away. Add a few sliced red potatoes which have a high water to starch ratio after seasoning your meat and it'll be simmering in wonderful flavor for hours.

For best results instead of using water, try using a beef stock for a really vibrant flavor.

Yes, add some water or stock to the crock pot - stock will lend it more flavor. (as will browning the meat before adding it to the crock). Also add some chopped garlic and onion for added flavor - yum!

I always thought it was NECESSARY to add water or broth, but my Mom set me straight on that! She makes potroast, and even more scrumptious, beef short ribs in her crockpot without any liquid at all...she salts and peppers them and sometimes adds a bed of sliced onion beneath them. You'll be amazed at how much juicy goodness comes from the meat!

Not if you also have some vegetables in with the meat. They will produce plenty of moisture as they cook. If it is just the meat alone I recommend a cup or so of liquid (water, broth, wine, beer) to get it started.

You need liquid, but why not use a splash something like stock or red wine or dark beer that'd add a good flavor?

Yes, maybe as much as a cup, but instead of water, try broth, or tomato juice (V8 is quite nice), or wine.
