Alfred Russell Wallace discovered this process independently of Darwin. In fact, finding out that Wallace had come up with the same ideas gave Darwin the motivation to go ahead and publish his book. Darwin had been procrastinating on that for years.

it's only charles darwin who proposed the theory of natural selection... the proposal was found in his book on the origin of species by means of natural selection...
